Revisiting the Canon

Link to submission form: St Andrews Postgraduate Symposium of Art and Culture; Revisiting the Canon – Fill out form

The St Andrews Symposium of Art and Culture is excited to announce a Call for Posters in the theme Revisiting the Canon

The canon refers to works that are conventionally accepted and perpetually revered. It directly and indirectly shapes how people encounter, experience, and understand art. Pausing to reflect on the constructed canon, this symposium poses two fundamental questions: what do we study as ‘art’ and ‘culture’, and how do we study them? The symposium uses these questions to push for investigation and examination of the current landscape of knowledge and explore possibilities for the future.

We warmly invite proposals for a digital poster presentation on the Symposium’s website. Posters should address subjects and topics related to ideas of the canon in the fields of art, culture, and heritage from postgraduate students and early career researchers from any discipline. Showcases of creative practice are also welcome.

To submit a poster proposal, please use this link to upload a 150 word abstract and a 75 word biography, along with links to up to two images that will be included. The deadline for submission is 14 September 2026 and notification will be given no later than 21 September 2026. Final posters must be submitted before the symposium date.

Submissions are welcome from postgraduate students (Masters and PhD) and early career researchers of any discipline. Those interested in presenting their work at the Symposium but unable to attend the event are particularly encouraged to apply.
